Key findings of the 2003 Job Demand Survey:

Salaries-

In 2002 there were 1,604,502 professionals employed in the nation's 312,959

beauty salons, barbershops, skincare salons, day spas and nail salons. This was a

significant increase of 161,396 salons and 318,502 salon professionals since 1999.

Based upon a typical 50% commission factor, the average 2002 income for

salon professionals was $18.08 per hour while salon owners averaged $24.36 per

hour. The corresponding full-time Salaries were $42,720 for salon owners and

$36,360 for all non-owner salon professionals - inclusive of tips. Today, the

professional salon industry continues to offer terrific new employment opportunities

to qualified job seekers as hair designers, aestheticians, makeup artists and massage

therapists - to qualified job seekers. Whether it is to launch a new career or to begin

a mid-life career change, cosmetolory offers many new opportunities. Currently,

there are many exiting and positive career options in cosmetolory. By research

compiled in the most recent 2003 NACCAS job demand survey, cosmetologists have

dramatically increased their earning power today with zero unemployment due to

the severe shortage of licensed salon professionals.

Today, the salon industry is now in a state of crisis to find qualified salon

professionals, as American consumer's needs and demands rapidly rising for

professional image-oriented and relaxing hair, skin, nail and spa services. From

generation Next Teens to the aging baby boomers and beyond, everyone wants to

look and feel there best today. Not so surprisingly 76% of salon owners who tried to

fill open salon positions in 2002 said they were not able to find qualified and licensed

applicants. The professional salon and spa industry continues to offer terrific new

employment opportunities to qualified job seekers, both experienced and entry level

in salon chains as well as independent salons. Due to men's changing needs, the

number of barbershops has dramatically declined in recent years.

The salon industry is a job-seekers market. Some 56% of the salon owners

reporting that they had job openings. More than 572,000 open positions were filled

in 2002 with both experienced salon professionals changing positions( 73% of the

new hires) and with inexperienced professionals with less than one-year experience

(27% of new hires). The supply does not seem to be keeping up with demand.

Approximately 3 out of every 4 salons who looked for new employees in 2002

reported difficulty in finding qualiflied personnel.

OTHER KEY FINDINGS

59% of salon owners classified their salon as a full service salon, l8%

As a haircutting salon, 4% as a nail salon and 5% as a barbershop.

57% of salon employees work full time, 33% are part time (20-35

hours) and l0% are low time (less than 20 hours)

The average salon income, including tips, is about $30,000 to

$50,000/year.

While manicurists are currently only 10% of the current industry

employees (up from 2.6% in 1999), some 16% of the anticipated

vacancies are for professionals with those skills.

NATURE OF WORK

Hair has been the center of attention since people first began to care about

their appearance. The beautification of an individual's nails and skin also factor

into this concept.

COSMETOLOGISTS also called hairstylists shampoo, cut, style, color,

wave, straighten and generally fashion hair to enhance a person's appearance. They

also create special effects using one or more of the mentioned techniques.

Cosmetologists also manicure and artificially create and sculpt a person's nails to

beautify the appearance of the hands. They perform scalp and facial treatments as

well as apply facial make-up and provide make-up analysis.

MANICURISTS also called nail technicians perform all services required to

shape, sculpt and beautify a persons nails, hands and feet.

COSMETOLOGY TEACHERS perform all of the techniques described

above and also teach in a licensed beautv school.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Cosmetologist, manicurist and all other pernons working in a beauty salons

and schools generally work in clean pleasant surroundings, with good ventilation

and lighting. Good health and stamina are important because technicians stand a

great deal. Polished people skills and quality work habits are essential for success.

Although, full and part time employment are available most salons require their

enployees to work some Saturdays and evenings. Some individuals may find the

products we use to be annoying.

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

Cosmetologist, manicurists and all other persons working in a beauty salon

or school must follow all safety precautions when working with chemicals. Chemical

product packaging contains descriptions of safety procedures, which must be

strictly followed. Care must be taken to completely sanitize all metal implements

and other items before each use. Beauty technicians must wash their hands before

and after each patron. Sharp instruments must be handled with care so not to cut

oneself or others.

All safety procedures and directions found in all the cosmetolory,

manicuring and related instructional materials must be strictly adhered to during

all seruices and procedures.

Care must be taken to insure that all work areas are well ventilated and

maintained in a sanitary condition at all times.

All federal, state and local rules and regulations pertaining to public safety

and hygiene as they apply to cosmetolory services must always be followed

completely.
